Asus UL20A-A1 (Best Ultraportable Laptop)

The Asus UL20A is an interesting 12-inch ultraportable laptop. It is a great alternative for those who are looking for something portable, cheap, but with more power than a netbook. While it’s not as small or light as a typical 10-inch netbook, this 12.1 inch laptop has a larger screen and keyboard and it performs CPU-intensive tasks like transcoding video which a typical non-ION netbook will have hard time to accomplish. The only major drawback to the UL20A is lack of a HDMI port, something most other competitors do have but none of them will be as cheap and value packed as the UL20A.

Specification

  • 1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo Processor
  • 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 2 Slots, 4GB Max
  • 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
  • 12.1″ WXGA LED LCD Display
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 bgn
  • 0.3M Webcam
  • No Optical Drive
  • Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System (64 bit)
  • 7.5 Hours of Battery Life

Asus U30JC-A1 (Best Thin And Light Laptop)

Asus U30JC-A1

There have been some debate on whether the Asus U30JC or the 13-inch Macbook Pro should be the best in the thin-and-light category — Both laptops score pretty close in performance, graphics, as well as battery life; but the Macbook Pro has a more sexy design (with one-piece aluminum chassis and backlit keyboard); while the U30JC is not only $200 cheaper but also comes with a better specs. Our final decision is to put more weight on practicality and so the Asus U30JC win.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE (Best Non ION Based Netbook)

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE

We pick the Asus Eee PC 1005PE as the best netbook for several reasons.

  1. Design – The seashell inspired design of the Eee PC 1005PE is pretty stylish. The keyboard and trackpad is large and easy to use.
  2. Battery Life – Asus claims that the Eee PC 1005PE has a maximum of 14 hours battery life but in real life it last for around 11 hours of continuous web surfing over wifi. It’s still the netbook with best endurance to date.
  3. Choices – The Eee PC 1005PE is available in multiple variation. The standard model (1005PE-PU17) has a larger battery capacity for 14 hours battery life, but if you think you do not need such a long battery life, you can go for the 1005PE-MU17 model which promises 11 hour battery life at lower cost. Also, if you want your netbook to be capable for gaming or HD video playback, there’s a model called 1005PR which is exactly the same as the 1005PE, only with higher resolution screen (1366X768) and built-in Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator.
